Colombo to Badulla is the mainline railway. It is the most beautiful train journey Sri Lanka. Line in the railway it’s such a scenic beauty. You cannot get this type of beauty anywhere in the world. that’s been described as one of the most picturesque in Asia.
It will take you from Colombo to Badulla in the highlands via Kandy. This journey of around 270 kilometers. A special trip on unique tracks it was the island’s first railway route and it’s still known as the main line. There are 42 tunnels from Colombo. The mountain landscape has some visual treats in store for us other goodies await us on the train.
The British originally built the railway line to transport tea from the mountains to the port of Colombo. At first, tea was merely a substitute for coffee, which had been affected by a fungus called coffee rust.
Sri Lanka is one of the world’s biggest tea exporters. during the founding years, the construction of the railway line had to keep up with the opening of new tea plantations in the highlands. The British recruited highland Tamils from southern India as cheap labor to this day. tea is harvested in an unimaginably large area of two thousand two hundred and ten square kilometers
The trains head into the mountains on the main line twice a day. The total length of Sri Lanka’s rail network is around 1500 kilometers the gauge is wider than the regular. standard gauge
Sri Lanka’s highest station is Pattipola at 1891 meters. You are able to see this during your train journey in Sri Lanka.
There is 1881 meter height here at the railway summit here in particular which is supposed to be a Guinness world of records it is given john. marshall’s book of Guinness world records feeds facts and peaks of railways it is given the highest point reached on a broad gauge railway. This stretch is definitely one of the most attractive in the whole of Asia

Sri Lankan Railways don’t offer online train ticket booking, so you’ll need to use an agency to buy tickets for a Reserved Seat before you get to Sri Lanka.
You must order tickets more than 32 days before travel – this allows Hellow Travel to process your order and buy the tickets for you as soon as Sri Lanka Railways opens booking, which gives you the best chance of getting the date, train & class that you want.
Even so, tickets are in high demand, so I recommend selecting the Flexible option when you book so that if your first choice of train or class is unavailable, they’ll get you the next best class or next best departure on the same day.
